‘They just bin you’ – BBC pundit blasts Rangers for treatment of senior man

BBC Scotland pundit Billy Dodds has launched a stinging blast at Rangers for their treatment of manager Graeme Murty – claiming they have “used” and “abused” the former Scotland international.

Murty has been in charge of the first-team since being promoted from the Under-20s following Pedro Caixinha’s sacking in October – his second stint in the top job – and looks set to depart Ibrox this summer.

Dodds thinks it will be difficult for Murty to go back to his old role as Under-20s head coach – and admits that he couldn’t do it if he was in Murty’s position.

“They haven’t even given any recognition to Graeme Murty for the job he’s done. They’ve just said ‘we’ve used you, we’ve abused you, now off you pop,” Dodds said, as quoted by The Herald.

“I’m not saying that he can’t go back to being the youth coach, but it’s going to be harder for Graeme now to go back there. I don’t think that if I had been treated like that twice and these statements come out and the way the club have handled it – he might be different – but I couldn’t personally go back into that 20s role.

“You’re trying to help out and they just bin you?”

Murty joined the Gers in August 2016 from Norwich City’s Academy and was thrust into caretaker charge for the first time when Mark Warburton resigned in February 2017.

After stepping back down the Development Squad when Caixinha was appointed the following month, Murty was back in charge of the senior side seven months later.

With three games left in the season for the Gers, Murty’s time in the hotseat at Ibrox looks to be quickly running out.

Football Insider verdict:

The way Murty has been treated has been shoddy to say the least. The ill-advised statement by Dave King before the recent semi-final clas against Celtic is the sort of thing that has left people wondering if the board are deliberately trying to undermime the manager or are just inept. While there’s no doubt performances and results haven’t been good enough, the Gers board haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory with the handling of it. Any manager looking at taking the reins at Ibrox would be right to have some reservations.
