Thiago Silva backed to finalise Chelsea deal amid ‘big’ claim – pundit
Frank McAvennie has backed Thiago Silva to sign a contract extension at Chelsea.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted Silva will continue to be a “big player” for the Blues for “a few more years”.
According to The Guardian (24 January), the 38-year-old is set to prolong his stay at Stamford Bridge by signing a one-year extension.
The defender’s current contract expires at the end of the season and Graham Potter’s side are desperate to keep him in London.
The Brazilian has started all but one Premier League game for the London club this season and has played the full 90 minutes in all of those outings.
McAvennie insisted Chelsea need to keep hold of the versatile defender.
“I think he has been the stalwart for the club,” he told Football Insider.
“But that is what you get with Silva, you knew what you were getting. He does what he says on the tin and he is such a big player.

“Why would you not want to give him a new contract? Even if he is not playing every week. To have his influence in the changing room.
“He is a winner, to have him in the dressing room for the younger players to look up to. I think he will play for a few more years, I think he is a shoe in to sign a new contract.“
