This is how Sean Dyche convinced Evangelos Marinakis to hire him at Nottingham Forest

Sean Dyche is the new Nottingham Forest manager and details on how he landed the job have been revealed.

Dyche was appointed by Forest on Tuesday (21 October) morning, becoming the club’s third manager of the season.

The 54-year-old has been tasked with turning the ship around at the City Ground, following a chaotic few months.

Forest have failed to win any of their last ten games, and have slipped into the Premier League relegation zone.

Sean Dyche will replicate Nuno Espirito Santo

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Dyche will have assured Evangelos Marinakis that he would take the Nottingham Forest squad back to basics.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the Englishman understands the need to return to Nuno Espirito Santo’s style of play, and that is how he would’ve sold himself to Marinakis.

Dyche provided instant results at Everton when appointed back in 2023, coming in during a period of financial chaos, and managing to keep the club in the Premier League.

Wyness added that the former Burnley manager will be able to do the same at Forest and turn things around.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Look, Sean Dyche has been appointed. He knows Nottingham very well.

“Ian Woan and Steve Stone are two loyal compatriots behind him, and they also know Nottingham Forest very well. The fans will like that.

“I think his focus, and the way he would’ve sold himself to Marinakis, is that he understood what Nuno was doing and the need to get back to what Nuno was doing. Dyche knows they need to get back to those basics because it was working.

“Ange tried too many changes too soon and the squad weren’t having it. I think Dyche will handle the players really well. They’ll buy into him, and I think we’ll see some good progress in turning the situation around.”

Nottingham Forest’s transfer window plan

Meanwhile, Dyche will be told to work with what he has got at Nottingham Forest rather than being given lots of money to spend.

Sources say that the former Everton boss is unlikely to get a big transfer budget in the January transfer window and will instead have to utilise the players already at the club.

Owner Marinakis sacked Espirito Santo in September, with Ange Postecoglou succumbing to the same fate over the weekend.

As a result, Forest have suffered heavy compensation losses in the last few months, and will have to be careful not to breach profit and sustainability rules.
