‘This is what I’ve been told about Unai Emery signing Conor Gallagher’ – ex-Aston Villa employee

Aston Villa are pushing to agree the signing of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and are now closing in on an agreement.

Former Aston Villa senior scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Unai Emery views the 25-year-old as the perfect fit for his plans going forward.

Gallagher has started just nine of his 27 appearances across all competitions so far this season, and is keen to play more regular football ahead of the World Cup.

As a result, Football Insider revealed last month that Gallagher is open to a Premier League return, with Man United also counted among his multiple admirers.

Aston Villa have moved quickly in negotiations and are now the front-runners for the deal, although rival clubs are still keeping a close eye on his situation.

Aston Villa close in on Conor Gallagher agreement

Brown told Football Insider on 6 January that Crystal Palace were hopeful of signing Gallagher, but could be beaten to his signature given the funds involved.

Aston Villa have now moved into pole position after talks with Atletico Madrid, and the midfielder is believed to be keen to make the switch soon.

I’m told Villa are very keen on signing Conor Gallagher,” Brown told Football Insider.

“He’s been keen to move back to the Premier League, but it has depended on Atletico Madrid and whether they would be willing to let him go.

“If Villa can agree terms with them, then I fully expect this deal to happen because it’s something the player is interested in as well.

“He’d be a good fit for the way Villa play, and Unai Emery will be a big fan. He’s a hard worker and will bring a lot of energy to the midfield.

“And, if he can get back to playing regularly, he will give himself a good chance of making the England squad for the World Cup, which he wants to do.

“They’re not the only ones interested; a lot of clubs want him. But if Villa can come to an agreement, I think it’s a very good move not just for them but also for Gallagher.

Aston Villa plot sensational Tammy Abraham return

Gallagher is not the only player on Villa’s radar this month, as they remain determined to strengthen up front with the addition of a new striker.

Football Insider revealed on 12 January that Aston Villa are in talks to re-sign Tammy Abraham, with both Roma and Besiktas involved in discussions.

The striker is currently on loan at the Turkish club, who are demanding compensation if they are to forfeit their £11million obligation to buy him in the summer.

Brown told Football Insider in November that Aston Villa want to sign a top striker in the January transfer window amid concerns about their depth in that position.

Emery’s side were heavily linked with moves for the likes of Nicolas Jackson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin during the summer as they eyed numerous forward targets.
