Thomas Partey reacts to Tariq Lamptey after Brighton knock Chelsea out
Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey posted a message on social media after defeating his former club Chelsea in the FA Cup.
Brighton secured a 2-1 victory, knocking Chelsea out of the competition despite going behind early following a Bart Verbruggen own goal.
Georginio Rutter quickly equalised in the 12th minute, while Kaoru Mitoma netted a controversial Brighton winner, with some claiming the ball struck his arm before he scored. Rutter also took to social media after the match to celebrate the win.
Fabian Hurzeler has been under pressure as Brighton boss due to recent performances, but this result will provide a much-needed confidence boost as they continue their cup run.
Lamptey, who started against his former side, delivered a standout performance and was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his display.
Fabian Hurzeler needs to trust Tariq Lamptey in big matches
Lamptey took to Instagram after the game, posting a picture of himself holding the Player of the Match award with the caption “Progress” and the hashtag “Thank God Always.” Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey showed his appreciation by liking the post.

The full-back has struggled for consistent minutes under the German coach, making just 14 appearances and six Premier League starts this season. Injuries have hampered his progress since Brighton signed him when he was just 19 in 2020, which have prevented him from building momentum.
Lamptey was branded “unacceptable” when Brighton lost 7-0 to Nottingham Forest when he conceded a penalty in the game. However, Hurzeler has continued to play him, and his faith was repaid with a strong display against the Blues.
Leicester City were interested in signing Lamptey during the January transfer window, but a move failed to materialise. Now, he is focused on earning his place back in Brighton’s starting lineup.
Brighton must push for consistency after FA Cup win
Football Insider Verdict
Hurzeler’s tenure at Brighton has been mixed since taking over from Roberto De Zerbi last summer.
While he has secured statement wins against teams like Manchester United and Chelsea, he has also overseen disappointing defeats to Everton and Nottingham Forest.
Brighton currently sit 10th in the Premier League, but with just six points separating them from a European place, a strong run of form could put them back in contention.
With Lamptey rediscovering his best form, his resurgence comes at a crucial time. They will now turn their attention to a key clash against Enzo Maresca’s side as they face once again on 14 February, where they must build on their FA Cup momentum.
