Thomas Tuchel is to blame after Chelsea update on Romelu Lukaku talks – pundit

Kevin Campbell has slammed Thomas Tuchel for refusing to play to Romelu Lukaku’s strengths during his ill-fated time at Chelsea.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 29-year-old “knows what he wants” as talks continue over a potential Stamford Bridge exit.

According to The Telegraph (10 June), Lukaku has been told by Chelsea’s new owners that the club are prepared to allow him to return to Inter Milan just one season after leaving the Italian giants.

However, it is claimed that Inter cannot afford to re-sign the forward permanently or cover the Belgian’s wages as part of a potential loan deal.

Lukaku scored 15 goals across 44 games in 2021-22 but Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has suggested the striker didn’t “enjoy” his football.

The 29-year-old gave a notorious Sky Italy interview in January – during which he went public with his unhappiness at life at Stamford Bridge.

Campbell pointed the finger at Chelsea for misusing their £97.5million addition.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “When you have a striker like Lukaku, you’ve got to play to his strengths.

“All of a sudden he came in and he had to fit into a system. When actually – if you’ve got the best gun, you’ve got to keep loading that gun.

“Because of what happened with that interview I think the manager and the fans turned against him – but how are you going to spend £100million on a player and then not play to his strengths?

“I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s something Thomas Tuchel will look to address, but Lukaku knows what he wants.

“Inter will play to his strengths, that’s for sure.”
