‘Thomas Tuchel to quit England after 2026 World Cup’ with major Premier League job firmly in his sights
Thomas Tuchel is believed to be a strong contender for the permanent Man United job and could take charge immediately after leading England at the World Cup.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the 52-year-old is very highly thought of at Old Trafford thanks to his success with Chelsea.
Should United decide to push forward with Tuchel as their first-choice candidate, the boss will be asked to make a decision about his future with England.
His contract with the FA is set to expire following the World Cup, and many expect him to walk away whether he is successful or not, but he could be tempted to stay.
Tuchel was a top target for Man United in their attempts to replace Erik Ten Hag in 2024, and still has admirers behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Thomas Tuchel emerges as leading Man United candidate
Football Insider revealed on 11 January that Man United are lining up a “top-class” manager to become their next permanent boss following an interim spell.
Tuchel has emerged among a number of options, with the likes of Oliver Glasner and Julian Nagelsmann also widely discussed ahead of the summer.
“Tuchel is certainly going to be a contender,” Brown told Football Insider.
“He’s been on their radar for a while and will be on the list again now because people are expecting him to leave England after the World Cup.
“If United decide he’s the man for the job, then they’ll see if they can tempt him.
“A lot, then, will depend on what he decides to do after the World Cup and whether he’s going to stay on with England if they’re successful.
“If he gets a big offer from the FA, perhaps he enjoys the slightly more relaxed nature where it’s not constant work and pressure in the Premier League.

“But if he wants to come back into club management, Man United could offer him that chance because he’s very highly thought of behind the scenes.
“Look at what he’s done before with Chelsea, he’s a top manager and they’d be foolish not to look at him even if it’s as one of a number of candidates.”
Man United close in on appointing new interim manager
While the club have their sights set on the appointment of a new permanent boss in the summer, they are pushing forward with plans to bring in an interim manager.
Brown told Football Insider on 12 January that Michael Carrick is closing in on the role, despite previous suggestions Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the front-runner.
Carrick was most recently the head coach at Middlesbrough before his dismissal in June 2025, but has been frequently tipped for a role in the Premier League.

The former midfielder made 464 appearances for the Red Devils, lifting the Champions League and five Premier League titles, and could now make a return.
Football Insider revealed on 9 January that Man United were eyeing Solskjaer as the favourite for the role, but Carrick has now moved ahead.
