Three alternatives who Everton can sign after John McGinn update at Aston Villa

David Moyes appears to have been handed a new major blow months before Everton head into another transfer window.

Jack Grealish has been immense for Everton since arriving on loan from Man City, and so too has Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but the Toffees still missed out on some big names over the summer period.

John McGinn is now in talks over a new Aston Villa contract, news which comes just weeks after Moyes’ side attempted to lure him over to Merseyside ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

With the Scotland international expected to sign across the dotted line at some point, Football Insider has detailed three alternatives that Everton could keep tabs on ahead of January.

Hayden Hackney

Mick Brown revealed to Football Insider in August that Everton and Crystal Palace were eyeing Hayden Hackney, but the 23-year-old has remained at the Riverside Stadium this season.

In nine Championship appearances, he already has a goal and two assists from the centre of midfield, having notched eight goal contributions in 43 games last term.

Middlesbrough have experienced a brilliant start to the 2025-26 campaign, currently sitting second in the table after nine games, and he could be a Premier League player next season. That might increase his price tag.

Yves Bissouma

Football Insider revealed last month that Everton and West Ham are leading the race to sign Yves Bissouma ahead of the January transfer window, and his future looks bleak at Tottenham.

Although his career has not worked out in North London, the 29-year-old is, undoubtedly, a talented player, but supporters have not seen enough from him since his move from Brighton in 2022.

He continues to prove on international duty with Mali that he can be a powerful character in the final third, and Moyes might be the manager to bring that out of him.

Tomas Soucek

Tomas Soucek was heavily linked with a move to Merseyside over the summer period, with the potential of linking back up with the manager who got him firing on all cylinders at West Ham.

Moyes has a history with the player, which may make him the perfect candidate to replace the whole left by McGinn‘s potential new contract at Villa Park, but he is an entirely different player.

Not only does he offer a solid defence, but he can also add plenty of danger in the final third, popping up with the occasional goal or assist, which is what McGinn has become famous for in the West Midlands.
