Key man too important: Three areas Newcastle United must improve after win v Stoke

The finishing

To say that former Stoke man Joselu had a bad day in front of goal would be an understatement.

Yes, he performed admirably as a target man, offering a physical presence to hold the ball up, pressure the Potters’ defence and offer options to his team mates.

However, his primary objective is to stick the ball in the back of the net, and he passed up no less than three glorious opportunities to do so.

He was not the only man in black and white to have given up clear cut chances, with Ayoze Perez and Christian Atsu also guilty.

Their profligacy put Newcastle’s victory under threat, and in a league as competitive as the Premier League, they need to ensure they take their chances or risk being cruelly punished.
