Three Newcastle players who must be secured to new contracts after Bruno Guimaraes latest
Newcastle are set to tackle a mounting list of players running low on their current contracts as they look to keep Bruno Guimaraes amid interest from other top clubs.
Sources told Football Insider on 29 September that Guimaraes wanted to stay at Newcastle as his current deal continued to tick down.
This came after Newcastle were increasing efforts for Guimaraes to sign a new contract after intense interest from Man City during the summer.
The Brazilian is on a current deal with the club that lasts until June 2028 with the Magpies reportedly seeking to extend his contract until July 2030 (UOL, 11 October).
Whilst good progress is being made with the number 39, Football Insider reveals the three integral players who must receive a contract extension to stay at St James’ Park.

Nick Pope – Contract expiring June 2026
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider in July that Nick Pope could’ve joined Leeds after the Toon’s heavy pursuit of signing James Trafford as their new number one.
Ultimately, as was the trend of Eddie Howe‘s summer transfer window, he was pipped to the post for the ex-Burnley shot stopper by Man City.
Pope maintained his starting berth and so far this season has shown why he is so important for the Magpies’ rearguard.

In the Premier League, the 33-year-old has kept five clean sheets in seven matches, conceding just five goals which is the joint second lowest in the English top-flight.
Moreover, his 79.2 per cent save percentage from 19 saves shows his dependancy in goal, often being the difference maker given Newcastle’s struggles at the other end of the pitch.
With the former Claret’s contract running out at the end of the campaign, time is of the essence for Howe to extend his stay on Tyneside.
There are no guarantees 2025-26 season loanee Aaron Ramsdale will stay next season which could leave the goalkeeper position looking extremely light.
Furthermore, the number one certainly has at least four years more in him at a top footballing level, making a contract renewal seem a no-brainer.
Kieran Trippier – Contract expiring June 2026
Sources told Football Insider on 7 October that Newcastle are keen to agree a new deal with Kieran Trippier.
The 35-year-old is in his fifth campaign at St James’ Park and is one of the most respected players both on the pitch and in the changing rooms.

Although his minutes have been reduced in recent seasons with his prime years behind him, the England international is still critical to the way Howe plays.
The right-back’s set-piece delivery and crosses remain one of the Magpies’ best weapons and if he was to leave at the end of the season he would leave a hole that couldn’t be filled on Tyneside.
If no deal is to be agreed, Newcastle are already on the hunt for a Trippier replacement, yet it would be wiser to keep him at the club.

Perhaps a short-term contract extension would be best, allowing Tino Livramento to continue to flourish under the ex-Atletico Madrid defender’s stewardship.
Moreover, a show of faith by the Toon to keep the Englishman could even lead to him staying further into the future in a coaching capacity.
Dan Burn – Contract expiring June 2027
The boyhood Newcastle fan has quickly become one of the fan favourites on Tyneside after joining in January 2022 from Brighton.
The 33-year-old is one of Howe’s go-to players with his versatility to play both at centre-back and left-back proving vital during the Magpies’ previous injury crises.

Dan Burn is in the same boat as Fabian Schar with the pair both of the same age, similar position and both running out of time on their contracts at St James’ Park.
The Switzerland international is set to leave on a free at the end of the season, yet it feels more pressing for the club to extend the Englishman’s stay given his fitness record.
The ex-Seagull has missed just 12 matches for the Toon during his five seasons in the north-east whereas Schar has been absent from 46 matches over a longer period.
Games missed through injury for Newcastle/international team | Fabian Schar | Dan Burn |
2024-25 | 1 | 0 |
2023-24 | 6 | 10 |
2022-23 | 1 | 2 |
2021-22 | 2 | N/A |
2020-21 | 17 | N/A |
2019-20 | 17 | N/A |
2018-19 | 2 | N/A |
Total | 46 | 12 |
Indeed, the number five joined Newcastle back in July 2018 but his increasing absences show how important Burn’s positive injury record is for the team.
A sensible move would be to let the injury-prone Swiss leave on a free next summer and conversely extend the England international’s stay at St James’ Park.
