The central midfielder has had a mixed beginning to his debut Premier League season, but at just 22-years-old he will certainly grow into the role.
However he struggled at Brighton, as he was unable to stamp his authority on the game, instead letting the Seagulls’ midfield run the show.
It was a similar case to the Stoke game, and although he managed to wrestle his way back into that one, he was a bystander for much of Sunday’s game.
With Jonjo Shelvey, who ended up replacing Hayden against the Seagulls, breathing down his neck for a place in the starting XI, it is time to bench the former Arsenal man, and see what a midfield pairing of Shelvey and Mikel Merino can do.
