Despite getting on the score sheet against Liverpool, Joselu can take very little credit for the goal.
Jonjo Shelvey’s through ball dissected the Reds’ defence to perfection, and although the striker’s run was timed well, he looked cumbersome and uncertain as he charged down on goal.
He took far too much time to make a finish, and was incredibly lucky to see Joel Matip’s tackle rebound off his ankle and role past Simon Mignolet.
It was a chance better suited to the pace and finesse of Dwight Gayle, and with Shelvey looking like he has regained his place in the starting XI, it is about time last season’s top scorer did too.
His positioning and speed should terrorise the giants in the Southampton defence, and would offer the necessary outlet up top for the Magpies’ blistering counter attacks.
