Big money wasted on flop: Three players Rangers must bin in January

Bruno Alves

When Rangers fans heard they were signing Alves, they were excited by the prospect of the veteran defender bossing forwards and smashing into tackles.

Instead, they’ve got an off-the-pace veteran who looks shocked by the physical side of the game – in other words, a flop.

There’s definitely some benefit to keeping marquee summer signing Alves around but, if push comes to shove, the Portugal international isn’t exactly one of the lower earners at Ibrox and might have to be sacrificed to make a few extra pounds available to whoever replaces Caixinha.

Like with Alnwick, the players competing for a place with Alves are more than capable of filling his jersey – just look at Ross McCrorie –  with little impact on the quality of the team.

If the new manager wants to keep Alves around, then Niko Kranjcar ticks almost all of the same boxes as the defender.

In other Rangers news, this top-flight winger has given an emphatic response to being asked when he will join the Light Blues.
