Main man must be axed: Three things learned about Newcastle in clash v West Brom

COMMENT

Newcastle United were unable to mathematically secure their Premier League safety on Saturday after suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of West Brom at St James’ Park.

The Magpies came into the clash off the back of a defeat at the hands of Everton on Monday night, a result which had ended their impressive four game winning streak that had seen them rocket up the table and into the top half, and needing just one point to guarantee their place in the top flight.

The Baggies meanwhile sat rock bottom of the 20 sides and knew they needed to pick up a win to have any chance of an unlikely rescue from the drop.

Despite the gulf in league position, it was the visitors who took the lead, Matt Philips latching on to Jake Livermore’s pass through and confidently slamming the ball past Martin Dubravka before the half hour mark.

So what can Newcastle fans take away from what a disappointing result against the top flight’s basement club?

Here, Football Insider picks out three things learned from the defeat on Tyneside, including one man who deserves the axe after a massively sub-par performance.
