Newcastle deserve plenty of plaudits for the way they have emphatically wrestled themselves out of the drama of a relegation battle and into the top half, but it appears that praise has gone to their heads.
There was no intensity or desire from Benitez’s men – the very qualities which have got them to where they are – and with West Brom still battling for their very lives, it was clear who wanted the three points more.
Sloppy passes and a lack of focus were all on show at St James’ Park, and they can only have themselves to blame for defeat.
The Newcastle players do deserve a holiday for their efforts throughout the season but it looks as though they have all taken to take their break early – something the manager will not take kindly.
