Main man must be axed: Three things learned about Newcastle in clash v West Brom

Time to axe Shelvey

After failing to have the desired impact against Everton less than a week ago, Saturday saw another less than impressive display from Newcastle’s midfield maestro.

Slow in possession and lacking the cutting edge that he has showed so often, Shelvey offered very little to a blunt attack – not something that has been said too often after a dazzling couple of months in the middle.

Whether his head has gone following what looks to be certain Premier League safety, or whether he has over exerted himself and is starting to feel the wear of the season, these sorts of performances are not what anyone on Tyneside have come to expect.

Axing the 26-year-old just for one game ought to give him the chance to recharge both his mental and physical batteries, and with little to play for, would give another the chance to star in his absence.
