Three things learned about Newcastle v Arsenal: Maestro proves himself against stars

Attack desperately lacking

The fact that the Magpies managed to hold Arsenal to just one goal was mightily impressive, but it is not the performance at the back which will be concerning both the Newcastle faithful and Rafa Benitez.

The club’s attack were toothless and never really threatened the Gunners’ defence, and it is a lack of goals which is dragging the club into a relegation battle.

A goal could have secured a point here, as well as in their midweek defeat to Everton, and they need to be finding a way to turn these narrow defeats into a draw or more.

Joselu and Dwight Gayle have not shown enough up top to warrant a regular place in the side, and the support offered by the midfield is also sub-par – and a foray in the transfer market is a must.
