Three things learned about Newcastle in Chelsea defeat: Fans’ favourite must take blame
Midfield maestro off the pace
Mikel Merino has become a key member of the Newcastle squad but there were real concerns over his display at Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old looked off the pace and was guilty of gifting possession to Antonio Conte’s men with a poor passing display, and although he did grow into the game, he never reached the heights he has shown this season.
Perhaps his recent injury layoff has had an effect but if that is the case, he should not be starting when Newcastle need 100 per cent from every one of their stars.
He was by no means the worst player on the pitch, but considering what he has shown, he was certainly one of the biggest disappointments.
