Benitez decided serious changes needed to be made to the starting XI after the woeful display against Watford in the 3-0 defeat, dropping the likes of Rob Elliot and Jonjo Shelvey from the starting XI.
While Shelvey returned from the bench to play a key role, Newcastle really did not look like they were missing Elliot, Javi Manquillo, Mo Diame or Dwight Gayle against West Brom, and it will give him food for thought ahead of a tough clash against Chelsea.
The axe worked wonders in a way, and he may make yet more changes when the Blues visit St James’ Park.
