Attacking star must be axed: Three things learned about Newcastle from draw v Liverpool

Ritchie benefits from Shelvey start

While Joselu will be credited as the goal scorer, it was Jonjo Shelvey who set up the Spanish striker with a delightful ball to dissect the Liverpool defence.

The midfielder was returning to the starting XI after a stint on the substitute’s bench and impressed with his passing range and work rate in the middle.

However his inclusion also benefited winger Matt Ritchie, with the responsibility of creating goal scoring opportunities dissipated between the duo.

Ritchie looked much more comfortable on the right flank and with Shelvey feeding him time and again he was able to find himself in dangerous positions.

He also showed his work ethic with an impressive defensive display.
