No Ritchie, no party: Three things we learned from Newcastle v Brighton

Newcastle need to do the basics

While Benitez and his coaching staff scour through the match footage to analyse just what went wrong against Brighton, there is one thing which everyone watching would have picked up on.

The Magpies were guilty of failing to stick to the basics, with misplaced passes, a lack of movement and a disappointing defensive display.

It was what had helped them grind out results against Stoke and Swansea in recent weeks, but it seemed to disappear from the players’ heads as soon as they stepped out onto the Brighton pitch.

With a clash against an attack focused Liverpool side up next, Benitez will have to ensure his side are expertly drilled or risk seeing his side torn to shreds.
