27-year-old must be sold: Three things we learned about Tottenham in win against Wycombe
COMMENT By Harvey Byrne
Football Insider analyses three talking points from Tottenham’s 4-3 win against Wycombe in the FA Cup on Saturday.
A new forward is needed
Tottenham started the match with an attack consisting of senior trio Moussa Sissoko, Georges Kevin N’Koudou and Son Heung-min. However, they all struggled at times against a League Two side. This was the match they would have been looking to take the opportunity to score a few, but two deflections where needed for Son to even get on the score sheet, while N’Koudou was brought off at half time. There doesn’t seem to be anyone in the Spurs side able to step in for when star forward Harry Kane isn’t playing. Mauricio Pochettino did sign Vincent Janssen in the summer, but his goal on Saturday marked his fourth penalty from 24 fixtures without scoring from open play. A new quality forward is needed as backup to Kane if Tottenham are serious about a title challenge.
Sissoko must be sold sooner rather than later
Tottenham picked up Moussa Sissoko from relegated Newcastle in a massive £30million fee in the summer. It was a strange move for many, especially those of the Newcastle support. However, Spurs fans were willing to give him a chance after a strong Euro 2016 campaign. But, Sissoko has proved in his first 19 appearances that he isn’t up to the level of Tottenham and he will never be good enough. The France international attacker has just four assists from his outings and if Spurs are to make back any of their original expenditure for the 27-year-old then they must sell him on as soon as possible before his value plummets even further.
Pochettino needs to play a stronger team in the cups
Spurs supporters are desperate for silverware, but it took a late goal from Son to see them through to the next round of the competition. They haven’t won a trophy since their League Cup victory in 2008, while they were also dumped out of the same cup in the early stages of this campaign due to Pochettino not taking it seriously enough. It is clear that the Argentine must start playing a stronger side outside of the league if he is to finally bring a trophy home for the Tottenham fans to cherish.
In other Tottenham news, Pochettino issued an ultimatum to his Spurs players before the match.
