This man miles away from first team – Three things learned in Tottenham v West Ham
COMMENT by Russell Edge
Tottenham crashed out of the League Cup round of 16 with a bitterly disappointing 3-2 defeat to West Ham at Wembley on Wednesday.
Spurs made a bright start to the match, breaking the deadlock after just six minutes, with French midfielder Moussa Sissoko scoring his second goal for the club after a swift counter attack.
It was a first half in which Mauricio Pochettino’s men looked comfortable against their local rivals, and Dele Alli’s goal, via a deflection off a West Ham player, just before the half time break saw the scoreline reflect their performance.
However it was the visitors who netted next, 10 minutes after the restart, Andre Ayew poaching a goal from yards out after Michel Vorm palmed the ball into his path following a fierce shot.
Five minutes later and the Hammers were level, the Ghanaian winger again finding the ball at his feet, smashing past the Dutch goalkeeper to level the scores.
Then, with 20 minutes left to play, Angelo Ogbonna firmly planted a header into the net to completely turn the game on its head and end Spurs’ hopes of adding to their four League Cup titles in their history.
So what can Tottenham supporters take away from their disappointing loss?
Here, Football Insider analyses three things learned in Wednesday’s defeat, including one man who proved just how far away from staking a claim for a regular role in the side he is.
