Todd Cantwell jokes about Blackburn winner in controversial Preston win

Blackburn Rovers ace Todd Cantwell has jokes online about his match-winning penalty in his side’s 2-1 win over Preston North End.

John Eustace’s side ended a three-game losing run with a 2-1 victory over their fellow Lancashire side at Ewood Park on Friday night (31 January).

The visitors were left furious with the award of that penalty after Jack Whatmough cleaned out Dom Hyam, along with other decisions in that game.

Irrespective of that, and despite a long wait while his teammate received treatment, Cantwell stepped up to convert for his second goal of the season.

Both of those have come from the spot, and it seems the Blackburn ace was well prepared for the pressure of such a situation.

Todd Cantwell enjoys Blackburn success vs Preston

A reel shared on Instagram by the League of 72 showed two penalties scored by Cantwell, one of which was the one against Preston, where he converted into the bottom right corner.

The second came from a training video alongside the EFL content producers that had been filmed previously.

Cantwell had put the ball in the same part of the net, after telling the goalkeeper he would shoot to other side.

That post included a caption noting the Preston penalty had not been the Blackburn star’s “first rodeo” when it came to penalties.

The attacker then shared that to post to his own Instagram story, captioning it with several laughing face emojis.

This was a big moment for Cantwell, who many members of the Ewood Park faithful expected to play a big part for the club this season when he signed from Rangers back in the summer.

Given his penalty to secure the win over Preston moved Blackburn back up to fifth in the Championship table, this could prove to be a key contribution.

After his acrimonious exit from Ibrox, the attacker will likely also feel he has a point to prove by helping his new club in their push for promotion this season.

He will therefore no doubt be looking to produce moments such as this again going forward, from open play as well as the penalty spot.

In other news, Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom supposedly feared a ban when reacting to his side’s defeat to Blackburn.
