‘He is a top class player’ – Alex McLeish delivers verdict on Rangers summer signing
By Harvey Byrne
Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish has spoken highly of summer signing Bruno Alves, stating that he is a “top class player.”
The Ibrox giants has already been busy this summer in Pedro Caixinha’s first window at the club, bringing in five players.
Of those includes Alves, former Aberdeen captain Ryan Jack and experienced attacker Daniel Candeias.
But, it is the capture of Alves which has caught most fans’ attentions given his past which has seen him play for such clubs as Porto, Zenit Saint Petersburg and Fenerbache alongside winning the 2016 European Championships.
Now, experienced manager McLeish has told that he hopes Alves can become a good leader for Rangers in what is an exciting period for the club.
“In that regard, the one that is recognisable is Bruno Alves,” told McLeish to the Scottish Herald.
“He is a top class player and hopefully he will be a good leader for Rangers. In terms of the other guys, we have to wait and see the quality of them. It is exciting for Rangers and we will see what they can do on the pitch.”
Alves, 35, has had a colourful career, winning the Portuguese top-flight four times alongside two Russian Premier League trophies and one Turkish Super Lig medal.
He will now be hoping to add the Scottish Premiership to his trophy cabinet, but it will be hard for the Ibrox giants to dethrone fierce rivals Celtic alongside competing in the Europa League.
However, Caixinha’s signings are building more optimism around the club and supporters will be hoping the Portuguese can return Rangers to past glories.
