Tottenham are ‘getting more creative’ as unprecedented deal agreed – Borson
Tottenham are getting more creative with their transfer deals after agreeing a priority option to sign Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso as part of the Giovani Lo Celso sale.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Spurs will have reached the agreement after sanctioning the Argentina international’s move to the Spanish club for a relatively low fee.
Lo Celso, 28, returned to Betis for just £4.2million towards the end of the summer transfer window despite signing for Tottenham from the Seville-based club in a £55million deal five years ago.
But speaking to Estadio Deportivo on 2 September, Betis President Angel Haro confirmed Spurs have agreed a priority option to sign midfielder Cardoso, 22, as part of the deal.
Ange Postecoglou’s side will have first refusal on signing the USA international during a two-week period for £21million next summer.
Tottenham to kick-start new wave of Premier League deals
Borson expects to see more deals of this nature involving Premier League clubs and overseas targets in the future.
“I think clubs are getting more and more creative with the deals,” Borson told Football Insider.
“If you are selling to Betis, you know that you are probably not going to maximise your cash inflow from the deal.
“There are going to have to be other bits and pieces, be that sell-on clauses or other pieces like first options on other players you are potentially interested in.
“I think you will see more and more creativity around that when people are selling outside of England.

“Where it’s an English deal, I think you are going to see more deals where people are focused on the headline amount.
“But where clubs are not going to be able to pay huge headline amounts, then they are going to want some additional value within the deal and I’m sure people will get more and more creative around it.”
