Tottenham backed to agree bargain Illan Meslier deal after source’s reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has claimed Illan Meslier would be a bargain signing for Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker urged Spurs to spend money “like a big club”.

The Lilywhites are looking for a long-term successor to shot-stopper Hugo Lloris ahead of his contract expiring in 2024.

Back in November, journalist Michael Bridge claimed that the London club were eyeing up Meslier, 23, as a potential successor to Lloris.

On 12 March, Football Insider revealed that Leeds United have slapped a £30million-plus price tag on Meslier amid interest from multiple Premier League clubs ahead of the summer.

The Frenchman’s contract runs until 2026 after he signed permanently from Lorient back in 2020.

When asked if Tottenham would be willing to spend £30m on a new keeper, McAvennie told Football Insider:They are acting like a big club but they are doing everything except spend money like a big club.

That is down to Daniel Levy. I do not for one minute believe that they do not have any money, so go and spend it. It is not even his money. Daniel Levy does not own Tottenham, I believe it is Joe Lewis’ money.

If you own a club you want to get the best players and you are not going to get them at cut rates. Spurs have got to do that, they have never ever done it.

Spending £30m on a goalkeeper, it is nothing. The big clubs will spend £80-£100m on a goalkeeper. In today’s world it has to be done.
