Tottenham backed to complete ‘amazing’ James Maddison deal after reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Tottenham to take advantage of Leicester’s financial worries to complete the “amazing” signing of James Maddison.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Lilywhites would benefit from adding the 25-year-old’s creativity to their squad.

According to football.london (21 July), Antonio Conte wants to add a new playmaker to his Tottenham squad this summer after missing out on Christian Eriksen.

The Telegraph claim (20 July) Leicester could be forced to sell reported Spurs target Maddison if they want to do business of their own this summer.

The one-time England international, who is out of contract in June 2024, notched 18 goals and 12 assists in 52 games last season.

Whelan backed Tottenham to expand their midfield options by swooping for the former Norwich star.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “When I look at that Tottenham midfield, it’s a bit defensive-minded.

“It’s full of blockers who can do that hard graft, they should be looking for a natural playmaker who can open up doors for that front three.

“Maddison would be an invaluable player for them. Tottenham need that creativity.

“He was excellent for Leicester last season. Not just with assists, but with the goals he scored too – he wants to get in the box and make things happen.

“He would be an amazing signing for Tottenham this summer.”

Maddison has notched 45 goals and 32 assists in 169 games since joining the Foxes in 2018.

Spurs will play Champions League football from the group stage this season after finishing fourth last term.
