Tottenham backed to sign Clement Lenglet permanently after ‘scary’ £428m reveal – pundit

Tottenham have a “great opportunity” to sign Clement Lenglet outright as Barcelona continue to struggle financially.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ desire to sing a new defender.

On 2 June, Spanish outlet Esport3 reported Barcelona are working on a deal that would see Lenglet, 26, join Tottenham on a two-year loan deal.

As quoted by Spanish outlet Sport on Thursday (9 June), Barca’s economic vice president Eduard Romeu revealed the club need to find €500million (£428million) to save themselves from financial ruin.

The Catalan club need to remove some current players from their wage bill to facilitate the arrival of summer signings.

Kenny claims Spurs could take advantage of Barcelona’s financial situation to buy Lenglet outright.

“It all comes down to their needs and how desperate Barcelona are for money,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“If he isn’t involved at Barca and he won’t be playing there, you would think at some point they would like to cash in.

“They need to get rid of players to sign new players because as it stands, they can’t do that.

“It’s a great opportunity if you are interested in any of their players, get yourself in there.

“With Barca and what is going on there. It’s quite scary.”

Lenglet made 27 appearances for Barca during the 2021-22 season.

He has made 160 total appearances for the club.
