Tottenham backed to sign world beater in January after insider’s reveal – pundit

Tottenham may bolster their defence in January to arrest their poor defensive form.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ poor defensive record.

Tottenham have now conceded the first goal in nine of their last 12 matches after Tuesday’s (1 November) last-gasp 2-1 win over Marseille in the Champions League.

Speaking in the build-up to the game (31 October) and quoted by football.london, Spurs assistant coach Cristian Stellini revealed the squad have been working on a “perfect solution” to the problem for the last two weeks.

Spurs expert John Wenham told this site on Thursday (3 November) that Antonio Conte is to blame for the “carnage” as his side are trying to conserve energy during the first half of games.

McManus has been left baffled by Spurs’ poor defending this season.

“I don’t get it, Antonio Conte’s sides are usually so good at defending,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“The way he sets up is so focused on defence and those wing backs, that means the back three have to be absolutely solid and they haven’t been this season.

“I wonder if he is happy with his defensive options. It’s a good job he has Kane scoring those goals because otherwise, I think they will have had a few more draws and losses on their record this season.

“It is definitely something they could look at in January, signing a top defefnder, because conceding first and in every game is completely unsustainable.”

Tottenham

Tottenham have conceded 16 league goals this season, at least five more than any other side in the current top four.

Spurs are next ina action against Liverpool on Sunday (6 November).
