Finance guru can’t believe Tottenham boardroom boast amid ‘huge’ claim
The marketing department at Tottenham have surely overestimated their total number of supporters.
That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ global fanbase.
As relayed by the Daily Mail last Friday (1 July), Spurs claimed in a recent job specification for a partnership development manager to have 615.5million followers worldwide.

The boast from the Tottenham boardroom would mean roughly one in 12 of the world’s population identify as a follower of the club.
Plumey examined the numbers and concluded that Spurs have likely played fast and loose with the definition of a ‘follower’.
“The definition of fan and follower is key here,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“It seems like a huge number, 615.5m. You can look at the Facebook page. They have 25m there. There’s 7.5m on Twitter, 13m on Instagram and 18m on Tik Tok. Those are the main platforms.
“You can also look to add on some of the fans in South Korea. But even so, you’re still only getting to about 75m. To get to 615.5m seems like a stretch.

“We also don’t know about the uniqueness of each follower, i.e. are they following the club on multiple different platforms. Then it’s a question of how you define a follower, and then how do you turn that into cash?
“There’s no doubt that Spurs have got a global fanbase but how they measure and value that is very different to how we’re looking at. I think it’s very tricky to get to that number.”
