Tottenham braced for Cristian Romero bid after Postecoglou plea

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Tottenham star Cristian Romero will not go away despite their Champions League qualification, sources have told Football Insider.

Romero has lent his support to Ange Postecoglou at Spurs as he sits in a precarious position despite leading the club to Europa League glory.

The centre-back dropped an intriguing update on his future on Monday (26 May) – taking to Instagram to say: “I have no doubt that staying together led us to success. We must continue; this is the path.”

Nevertheless, Atletico Madrid are very interested in landing Romero and are ready to test Spurs’ resolve to keep the centre-back.

Sources say Atleti boss Diego Simeone is a “huge admirer” of his countryman.

Romero, who is out of contract in June 2027, struggled with in a challenging 2024-25 campaign but was fit for the most important game of all as Tottenham beat Man United in Bilbao.

He started 26 games across all competitions this term and often wore the captain’s armband for Postecoglou’s side.

Romero joined Tottenham on an initial loan from Juventus in 2021 before making his deal permanent a year later.

It has been widely reported that he is keen for Spurs to keep Postecoglou in the dugout – but the Australian’s future could prove immaterial as Atletico Madrid aggressively pursue him.

Tottenham set sights on three new signings

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Saturday (24 May) that Tottenham are aiming to sign players in three key positions after securing Champions League qualification.

A new centre-back is a top priority, while there is also a focus on bringing in a new wide forward and central midfielder when the window opens.

Spurs may have won the Europa League but finished 17th in the Premier League in a poor showing for Postecoglou’s side.
