Tottenham could be about to make a huge mistake over Jack Grealish signing

Jack Grealish would be a hugely risky signing for Tottenham as they consider a move for the Man City man in a deal that could raise questions over the futures of two players.

It has been a largely disappointing season so far for Spurs who for the most part have flattered to deceive across a remarkably inconsistent campaign.

A 2-2 draw with Wolves on Sunday (29 December) means it is now just two wins in the last ten games across all competitions for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

It is a run that has now seen Tottenham slip to 11th in the Premier League table, highlighting the need for the club to strengthen their squad in the transfer window.

But while one of their latest links could potentially put the future of two players at the club under some threat, there is an argument it would not solve the issues they have in that area of the pitch for Spurs.

Jack Grealish struggles mean he would be a risky replacement for Tottenham

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Spurs are one of the clubs who are currently monitoring the situation of Jack Grealish at Man City.

In some ways that interest does seem to make sense with the left-wing having been something of a problem position for Postecoglou’s side during the current campaign.

Timo Werner has flopped since returning to the Premier League with Tottenham. He is yet to score for them in the league this season and is of course still only on loan from Leipzig.

A string of poor performances followed by a run out of the side mean it would be a huge surprise if he was still in north London beyond the end of this season.

Son Heung-min meanwhile will be 33 before the start of the new campaign and his penalty miss against Wolves was a reminder that things are going nowhere near as well as they previously have for him.

Indeed, the South Korean is out of contract at the end of the season, and there has been speculation from some that he will not extend his stay at the club beyond that point.

All of that would leave Tottenham needing some extra depth on the left which Grealish would provide, but if a deal was to happen there would have to be concerns about whether it would even improve things in that area.

It has to be worth noting that this has been a difficult period for the England international himself, with Grealish having failed to find the net at all in a competitive club game across the calendar year of 2024.

Despite the struggles Man City have endured this season, he has also started just six of the 19 Premier League matches his side have played in the current campaign.

That is a rather damning reflection of the form he is in, highlighting that even with his side under significant pressure to turn things round, manager Pep Guardiola is not rushing to use him in a major role.

All of that means there signing Grealish would be a major gamble, since he is not showing much right now to indicate he would even be able to make the difference required with another club who should hold ambitions of winning silverware in the form of Tottenham.

With all that in mind, given his profile and position at Man City means they would not sell him to a rival such as Spurs on the cheap either – which could impact other transfer plans – moving to sign Grealish is something that could backfire in a big way for Postecoglou and co.
