Tottenham could now choose ‘superstar’ ahead of Djed Spence after journalist’s update – pundit

Frank McAvennie claims that Djed Spence will have to “fight for a place” in a Tottenham team now replete with “superstars.”

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said that Spence is by no means guaranteed a spot in Antonio Conte’s starting XI.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday (15 July) that the 21-year-old has completed his medical and is set to sign a long-term contract with the London club.

Middlesbrough are set to receive £12.5million plus add-ons for the England youth international, taking the total up to around £20million.

The right-back has two years left on his contract with Middlesbrough after he joined the Championship club in 2020.

He spent last season on loan with Nottingham Forest, helping them win promotion to the Premier League.

When asked where Spence would fit into the Tottenham side, McAvennie told Football Insider: “He’s going into a team who are now getting a few superstars.

They’ve got a couple of stars coming in, there’s a couple of stars there. It’ll be interesting for him.

Going to a team like Tottenham now, you’re not guaranteed a place. And Conte will tell him that.

He will be in a position to go there and fight for a place, that’s all you can ask for from him.”

Spence made 50 appearances for Middlesbrough across all competitions last season, including four appearances in their FA Cup campaign.

During that time he scored three goals and provided five assists.
