Tottenham news: Finance guru tips ruling body to back off after court update

Uefa will not take the chance to deter Tottenham from further breakaway attempts by punishing the remaining Super League clubs.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the ongoing fallout from last April’s controversial plot.

Spurs were one of nine clubs to drop out of the Super League after a monumental backlash from supporters.

Everton

But Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have refused to abandon the plot and were, until recently, shielded from Uefa punishment by an injunction.

But, as relayed by the Daily Mail last Thursday (21 April), the three could now be made an example of after a Madrid court lifted the embargo.

Uefa has previously stated they would come down hard on the trio in order to send a message that future breakaway bids will not be tolerated,

But Plumley predicts that the ruling body will now back off as to punish Barca, Real and Juve would be to punish themselves.

“It’s within their power to issue a warning shot,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“But can we really see a situation where Uefa would ban those three teams? I’m not so sure.

“Real Madrid, for example, are in the Champions League semi-finals. Are they going to ban them if they could potentially win it.

“We have seen fines and bans for other teams around Europe but we haven’t seen one of the big guns punished.

“It hurts Uefa to do that. That makes it tricky to use punishment as a deterrent to the other Super League clubs.”

Tottenham

Spurs are still in the hunt for the top four this season and trail North London rivals Arsenal by two points.

Antonio Conte’s side face Leicester City on Sunday (1 May).
