Finance guru reveals if Tottenham could have paid Luis Diaz what Liverpool are paying

Fabio Paratici is under “massive pressure” at Tottenham – but club chiefs could have paid what Liverpool are paying Luis Diaz if they wanted.

So says finance guru Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the sporting director’s job security in North London.

The Italian executive joined Spurs from Juventus in June last year and arrived with a glowing reputation as a transfer broker.

But the Daily Mail reported last Friday (4 February) that the club’s top brass are unhappy with the 49-year-old’s start to life at Spurs.

Two below-par transfer windows and the departure of long-standing chief scout Steve Hitchen are understood to have left Paratici under the spotlight.

But Spurs’ on-pitch performance has curtailed his grand recruitment ambitions, insists Plumley.

“In a football club, everyone’s under the microscope,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“This role is very important nowadays. There is massive pressure on those who are charged with going out and recruiting these players.

“But if they are finding it difficult to attract players, that’s partly due to what’s happening on the pitch.

“With missing out on Luis Diaz, for example, Spurs could stretch to the wages Liverpool pay, if they wanted to.

“But you have to take into account the sporting performance. The top players want Champions League football.

“That’s the aspiration, and it’s something that they can’t offer at the moment.

“So there will always be big pressure internally and that can sound dramatic. But it will always come back to success on the pitch.”

Spurs, who are currently 7th in the league, signed Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in the January window.

Two of Paratici’s three summer recruits, Pape Sarr and Bryan Gil, have been sent out on loan after underwhelming starts at Spurs.
