Tottenham expected to accept Cristian Romero offer

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Cristian Romero is intensifying and Tottenham are expected to accept an offer, sources have told Football Insider.

Atleti boss Diego Simeone has made no secret of his desire to land the 27-year-old and he will push to bring him to Madrid right up until the September deadline.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (1 July) that Tottenham are standing firm on their £60million valuation of star Romero.

Sources say the centre-back may have to push for a move away from north London if he wants to link up with countryman Simeone.

Atletico Madrid confident of Romero deal

The La Liga giants have been unsuccessful in their early attempts to land him following talks but are confident of wearing Spurs down before the end of this window.

Romero’s contract in north London is only set to run until June 2027 and he was a huge ally of sacked boss Ange Postecoglou.

The World Cup winner publicly urged Spurs to keep Postecoglou in the dugout but he was replaced by Thomas Frank last month, despite winning the Europa League last term.

Romero struggled with injury in the 2024-25 campaign but was fit and available, alongside Micky van de Ven, for the most important game as Tottenham overcame Man United in Bilbao.

He has made 124 appearances across all competitions for Spurs since arriving on an initial loan, scoring seven goals.

Romero could leave Tottenham despite their qualification to the league phase of the Champions League for the 2025-26 campaign.
