Tottenham expert baffled by ‘insane’ Antonio Conte move – ‘I’m sorry, it’s totally unacceptable’

The decision to not name an attacker on the Tottenham bench for their game against Aston Villa was “totally unacceptable”.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Of their nine names substitutes against Villa (1 January), one was a goalkeeper, six were defenders and two were midfielders.

Wenham can’t believe a Tottenham academy striker was not given a chance to impress.

“I’m just pleased he (Djed Spence) came on, that’s a start,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That’s an improvement on him not coming on whatsoever. Against Villa we saw players who we haven’t seen a lot of make appearances.

“Gil had that first Premier League start, Spence came on. Pape Sarr came on as well. For me, any appearance of a player who hasn’t appeared thus far is an improvement.

“If you look at the bench, there was nothing on it. We had three centre-backs starting then Dier, Tanganga and Sanchez all on the bench.

“Then two wing-backs in Royal and Spence, then a left-wing back in Sessegnon, two midfielders in Sarr and Skipp and then no attacking players.

“I’m sorry, it’s totally unacceptable, especially when we have so many bright academy prospects who could have filled that role.

“These players just need one chance to show themselves.

To have six centre-backs in a matchday squad of 18 is just insane.”
