Tottenham expert can’t believe Antonio Conte after never-seen plan emerges

Tottenham were unable to beat Chelsea because Antonio Conte deviated from his preferred three-at-the-back system.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Tottenham drew 2-2 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday (14 August) with a late Harry Kane header rescuing a point.

After Spurs first drew level through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Conte deviated from his regular system which immediately backfired as Reece James was able to score while being unchallenged by any Spurs defenders.

Wenham has no problem with the decision.

“Conte, interestingly, for once gave up the three at the back and made changes during the game,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That is something we have not seen him do at all at Tottenham so far. That left us with two at the back as we tried to push on in the game.

“That allowed the space for Reece James to score, he was completely unmarked when previously the third defender would have been there.

“It shows that we were going for it even at 1-1 to win the fixture. In the end, we had to settle for the draw.

“We still got the draw despite the changes so it was a decent result for us.”

Conte clashed with Thomas Tuchel several times during the game and was shown a red card after the full-time whistle was blown.

Tottenham are next in action against Wolves on Saturday (20 August).
