Tottenham expert ‘can’t believe’ latest development – ‘you have to be kidding’

Tottenham do not have the character or mentality to get a result against Marseille in the Champions League.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Tottenham travel to Marseille on Tuesday (1 November) knowing a win or draw will secure progression to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

However, a loss could see Spurs crash out of Europe, depending on what happens in Frankfurt v Sporting Lisbon.

Wenham is not confident after watching his side play away in Europe in recent years.

“Do I think we have the character, mentality and resistance to got to Marseille, with fans back and do what we need to do?” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s not a dead rubber for them at all. They know that if they beat us then they will go through. Do I think we have the minerals to go there and get a result? You have to be kidding yourself.

“If you think we do then you haven’t watched the last 36 or 48 months of Tottenham’s European away games. You have to be blinkered.

“We went to NS Mura and lost, Dnipro and lost. We didn’t beat Maribor or Anderlecht, we lost to Genk. These are Europa Conference League teams I am listing off.

“Even this season, away at Frankfurt we didn’t score, away at Sporting we lost and didn’t score. Suddenly we have to go to Marseille who will pack out their stadium, they have a huge opportunity to claim a scalp and go through themselves. It would be a massive coup.

“They have been poor in the Champions League for a number of years but now they have this opportunity at home, we have no pedigree in Europe as an away club.

“It’s also a team full of ex-Arsenal players or players on loan from Arsenal. Sanchez, Guendouzi, Tavares. They would love nothing more than to stick it on us.

“It’s a huge task for us and the game has come around quickly. I can’t believe we are in this position.”
