Tottenham expert: ‘I couldn’t believe my eyes’ at ‘absolutely pathetic’ thing Spurs did v Chelsea
The Tottenham marking for Kalidou Koulibaly’s goal on Sunday (14 August) was “absolutely pathetic”.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Koulibaly, 31, was left unmarked to volley home a corner in the first half of Sunday’s game, giving Chelsea a 1-0 lead.
Moments later, Chelsea had another corner and they used the same routine though the defender was unable to make solid contact with the ball.
Spurs used a zonal marking system with three players standing marking the space at the front post while Koulibaly went unchallenged.
Wenham could not believe what he was seeing while standing in the away end at Stamford Bridge.
“Absolutely pathetic marking, I’m sorry but it wasn’t just that goal,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“There was a corner straight after and he was left totally unmarked again. I thought ‘what the hell is going on?’.
“In the first ten minutes we started really well, we played like the home team. Then something changed.
“I turned to my mate and said we needed to get to that first water break because something had changed.
“Unfortunately we conceded before the water break, yes, it was a great finish but no one was marking him.
“To leave someone of that stature is criminal. We did it again at the second corner, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“Fantastic finish, take nothing away from that.
“If you are a centre-back and you are pulling that out, that’s impressive.”
