Tottenham expert is worried about Djed Spence after confirmed news

Antonio Conte’s latest comments on Tottenham summer signing Djed Spence do not bode well for the player.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Spence, 22, failed to make the matchday squad for Saturday’s (3 September) 2-1 win over Fulham.

His only appearance this season came against Nottingham Forest (28 August) as he came on for the final moments of the game.

On Friday (2 September), journalist Dan Kilpatrick quoted Conte as saying “Djed was an investment of the club. He’s a perfect prospect for Tottenham. But for sure if we want to win we need other signings. I want to be very clear about this.”

Wenham insists these quotes are a cause for concern.

“Conte’s comments are interesting,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Conte said in the week, ‘Djed is a signing for the club, he is a great prospect for Tottenham but for sure if we want to win we need other signings, I want to be clear about this’.

“That’s not great for his confidence, is it? It now does seem the cameo he was given against Nottingham Forest was a token gesture against his old club rather than anything more.

“I would really like to see Spence get a run out at right-back ahead of Emerson Royal but it doesn’t seem like that is going to happen anytime soon.”

Spence spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and played a key role in their promotion.

Spurs are next in action against Marseille on Wednesday (7 September).
