Tottenham expert issues ‘incredible’ Charlie Sayers claim

Antonio Conte and his Tottenham coaching staff believe Charlie Sayers in the best defensive academy prospect at the club.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Sayers started as Tottenham beat Motherwell 4-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly last weekend.

This comes after the 18-year-old signed his first professional deal with Tottenham on 30 March.

Wenham has been blown away by the defender’s development.

“There are loads of interesting points from this Motherwell game,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The starting of Charlie Sayers shows again the rapid progress he has made since he joined from Southend. He started for the Under 18s, went straight into the Under 21s and then went on pre-season to South Korea.

“He is now being selected to start friendly games as well, it’s incredible. Obviously, he is rated very highly by Conte and the coaching staff.

“You can tell by the selection as probably the best academy defender at the club, just how highly rated he is.

“That’s not my opinion but that is what the club think. He continuously gets picked for these games and spent a decent amount of time on the pitch as well.”

Promotion to first-team training earlier this season was yet another feather in the cap of the youngster who only moved to the club from Southend in December 2021.

Sayers has made five appearances for the Under 21s this term as well as five more for the Under 18s.
