Tottenham expert responds after Jamie Carragher’s ‘really poor’ Hugo Lloris comments

Tottenham expert John Wenham has defended Hugo Lloris amid a fresh bout of criticism following his performance against Newcastle.

Club insider Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels, reacted to Jamie Carragher’s comments.

Lloris, 35, got a firm hand to Fabian Schar’s first-half free-kick but was unable to keep the ball out of his net.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage, Carragher said, “You look at the goalkeeper, he has to save it. Really poor.”

However, Wenham disagrees with Carragher’s view as Lloris’ line of sight was obscured by the Spurs wall.

“Schar stepped up out of nowhere and fired that ball into the far corner,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I know Carragher was saying the keeper should get there, personally, I’m not sure, I’m not sure he’s right when he says that.

“He had a big wall in front of him, there were a lot of bodies so maybe he didn’t see it.

“Luckily, with the result going the way it did, we shouldn’t see any more criticism than what was initially put on social media when the goal went in.

“He doesn’t need that. It was a shame we couldn’t get a clean sheet but the win was the most important thing.”

Lloris has played every minute of Tottenham’s Premier League season.

He signed a new two-year deal with the club on 21 January.
