Tottenham expert shares ‘incredible’ claim after update on Jermain Defoe’s return

Jermain Defoe’s potential return to Tottenham would be “incredible” for the club’s young stars.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

As per Dan Kilpatrick (15 May), Defoe revealed he’s had conversations about returning to the club since he retired earlier this year.

The 39-year-old ex-Spurs hitman joined the coaching staff at Rangers as a player-coach when he signed a new contract in the summer of 2021.

He has since retired and links with a return to Tottenham have been rife.

Wenham insists Defoe joining the coaching staff at Hotspur Way can only be good news.

“Jermain still knows a lot of people at Tottenham,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He still leaves not far away from Hotspur Way. I would be more than happy for him to come back.

“When the young players are in the foyer of the training ground and the TV is showing Premier League years, it always has a screamer from JD on it.

“It’s someone they know and respect. Anyone those players really recognise as someone they used to watch on TV, it’s incredible. It’s always good to have them around.

“Jermain is also a lovely guy, I have had the pleasure of meeting him on a couple of occasions.

“I know Defoe and Kane really get on. When Kane was coming through he would work with JD on finishing in training.

“That’s the kind of thing he can do with our current young strikers.”

Defoe scored 64 goals in 176 total appearances for Tottenham.

He retired while at Sunderland after joining them during the January transfer window.
