Tottenham expert thrilled by ‘big’ game-changer he has spotted
Tottenham Hotspur’s newfound depth is the “biggest positive” to come from the club’s summer business.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Tottenham won their first game of the season against Southampton (6 August) 4-1.
Spurs made use of the Premier League’s new rules on substitutions, making five in the second half.
Yves Bissouma, Clement Lenglet and Ivan Perisic all made their competitive debuts off the bench while Lucas Moura and Matt Doherty were also given a runout.
Wenham insists Spurs’ summer business means the side will not get weaker when subs come on, as has been the case in previous seasons.
“We made five subs in the game including making four at once,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I looked at the subs who came on. The likes of Bissouma, Doherty, Lucas Moura, Ivan Perisic, Clement Lenglet, these are all guys who you could put in the starting XI and we wouldn’t be any weaker at all.
“That is the biggest positive of this summer. We can make subs and we don’t weaken the side, at all. These are all 26 or 27-year-old guys, apart from Perisic, who are in the prime of their careers.
“The first games of the season are always hard, we saw that with Liverpool. For us to get off so promisingly is brilliant.”

Strikes from Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, Dejan Kulusevski and a Mohammed Salisu own goal got Spurs off to a winning start in the 2022-23 Premier League.
They are next in action against Chelsea on Sunday (14 August).
