‘Idiotic’, ‘Crazy’ – Tottenham fans fume at reported transfer bombshell
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly given the go-ahead for Daniel Levy to sell defensive duo Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose this summer.
But it is the potential exit of the Belgian that is causing a stir amongst the Spurs faithful who are keen to see the 29-year-old enforcer remain at the club to go into the new stadium.
This summer a clause in Alderweireld’s contract can be activated with an offer of £25million for the player, despite his deal running until the summer of 2019.
Last season, the Belgium international formed a defensive mesh at the back alongside fellow compatriot Jan Vertonghen which saw them at the heart of a rearguard which conceded just 26 goals all season – the best in the Premier League.
However, a lengthy injury lay-off after picking up a hamstring problem last year against Real Madrid in the Champions League left him out of the side and 21-year-old Davison Sanchez take his place.
Despite making a return to full fitness, Pochettino has been reluctant to rush his centre-half back into the thick of the action.
The Spurs manager’s insistence to not use his most highly-regarded of defender’s has only served to fuel the speculation that the 29-year-old will be off in the summer, but if Spurs fans have it their way, he will remain in North London.
Here is a selection of Twitter responses from social media to the player’s exit:
