Tottenham have benefitted from injustice as Richarlison controversy analysed – pundit

The officials should have disallowed Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s goal against Chelsea on Sunday.

That is the view of former White Hart Lane number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the controversial incidents at Stamford Bridge.

As shown on Sky Sports (14 August), Hojbjerg scored Tottenham’s first goal in a 2-2 draw against the Blues on Sunday.

Substitute Richarlison was in an offside position when Hojbjerg’s shot was struck but he was not deemed to be impeding goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s line of sight.

Blues manager Thomas Tuchel reacted angrily to the goal’s award, in part due to a challenge on Kai Havertz during the build-up.

When asked by Football Insider if referee Anthony Taylor should have been instructed by VAR to disallow the goal, Robinson said: “You can understand why Chelsea feel hard done by.

“The Richarlison offside I can understand. It is a decision that can go either way. Unfortunately for Chelsea, it didn’t go their way on the day.

“The Hojbjerg goal probably should have disallowed because it almost clipped Richarlison’s ankles and he was in an offside position.

“There is an argument that Mendy is effected by that. If I was in goal, I would want that to be given. I would make a song and dance and say he was in my line of sight.

“But deep down, I think Mendy knows he would not have got anywhere near it.”
