Finance guru: ‘Millions of people’ to take notice of Tottenham’s Heung-min Son announcement

Tottenham will reach up to 11million fans in South Korea as they capitalise on the interest in Heung-min Son with an exhibition match in Suwon.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Spurs announced that they will play Sevilla in Son’s homeland on 13 July.

The club specifically mentioned South Korean skipper Son, 29, last Monday (23 May) as they revealed plans for the pre-season clash.

The forward shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in 2021-22 and has superstar status in his home country.

Interest in the player has spawned multiple South Korean Spurs fan clubs, and the club have a region-specific social media strategy in place to capitalise.

Tottenham Women also have So-hyun Cho on the books, the most capped Korean footballer of all time.

Plumley revealed the extent of Spurs’ influence in the country and how officials are keen to monetise the engagement.

“Pre-season is always lucrative,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“But if you line that up with an area where you know there is special interest in a player you’ve got, it can generate even more money.

“Son at Spurs is the gold standard. They have got South Korea fan clubs and social media accounts.

“I had a look at some numbers and there was a report from a reputable company called Nielsen Insights, and they found that 21 per cent of South Koreans considered Spurs their favourite overseas football team.

“That equates to 11m people. If those numbers are correct, that’s far more Spurs fans than they have in the UK. The club is going to monetise that in any way they can.”

Son’s 23 goals and nine assists in the Premier League helped Spurs finish 4th.

He is currently away with the national team, who face Brazil and Chile on Thursday (2 June) and next Monday (6 June) respectively.
