Tottenham hit by £5m blow after Son Heung-min outburst – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Tottenham could be forfeiting up to £5million after committing to skipping a post-season game in the 2024-25 campaign.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the decision is down to the threat of “player burnout” and stars potentially “going on strike”.
As per The Telegraph (26 September), Tottenham will not embark on another money-spinning post-season tour next summer.
Spurs travelled to Australia to take on Newcastle just days after the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
Son Heung-min has recently given his support to a movement to decrease the number of games in the football calendar after Man City star Rodri suggested players were close to going on strike.
He said: “Players are the main guys to have to say something and it’s definitely a lot of games. As a football fan you want to see a quality game, not as many games as possible, and you don’t want to see people or players struggling with injuries.”
Tottenham could forgo £5m as post-season fixture shelved, says Wyness
Wyness claimed the extra revenue must be foregone to protect the players.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The big debate has been about player burnout and too many games, players going on strike and so on.
“This is a big part of that, flying around the world after the season.
“If clubs are going to complain about burnout then these tours are one area in the firing line.
“Spurs are paying heed to that, and it makes sense.

“While it could bring in anywhere from £2million up to £5million, it’s one area which has to be foregone.
“We’ll have to see if players start putting in their contracts that they’ll only play a certain amount of games in a season.”
